Italy is located in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea and Southern and Western Europe. It is bordered by France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia. Part of the Alps are found in the north of the country, the most extensive and highest mountain range that lies only in Europe. The coastline is known for it’s famous boot shape so is often referred to as ‘the boot of Europe’ or ‘lo Stivale’.
The country is rich in culture, history and architecture and has a huge influence on cuisine, art and fashion. From the famous Italian dishes that are enjoyed throughout the world to the Vatican, which has been ‘The Centre of Christianity’ since the 4th century. Italy has more world heritage sites than anywhere else.
Their capital and largest city is Rome. The Roman Colosseum is one of the most significant sites in their vast history. It is the largest amphitheatre ever built during the Roman Empire, and also one of the most visited tourist attractions in the whole of Europe.
Italy’s economy is ranked eighth largest in the world. They are founding members of the G7, the European Union and were one of the 12 founding member states of NATO. The Italian industry consists of small and medium-sized enterprises. It is known for it’s competitive agriculture, influential and high quality businesses in automobile and fashion, as well as having the world’s largest wine production.
