France, located in Western Europe, shares its borders with eight countries. Belgium in the north. Monaco, Spain and Andorra in the Mediterranean coasts of the south. And Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland and Italy in the east. The mountainous regions of the Alps are also located in the east and the Pyrenees in the southwest.
France remains one of the world’s major agricultural centres and is the world’s sixth-biggest exporter of agricultural products, with over half of its total land area being farmland. The country has been one of the most powerful and influential of the continental countries since the Middle Ages and is a major economic power within the EU. It is currently the second largest economy in the Europe Union.
France was previously ranked as the most popular tourist destination in the world and as of 2023 it’s capital city, Paris, is the second most visited city in Europe after London. Popular for it’s variety of landscapes, wealth of history, beaches, ski resorts, cuisine and it’s 37 sites inscribed in UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
